Explore
Nestled between the Fichtelgebirge and the Upper Palatinate Forest, the granite ridge of the Steinwald rises above 900 metres – a striking landmark of northern Upper Palatinate. The dense forest is dominated by conifers, interspersed with beautiful beech groves.
Wind and weather have carved steep, bizarrely shaped rock formations out of the ancient granite: Räuberfelsen, Vogelfelsen, Saubadfelsen and many more. On the Platte, the 946-metre main summit, the Oberpfalzturm tower offers sweeping views. Hiking and cycling tours start right at the hotel – the European cycle route passes the door.

Between Falkenberg and Windischeschenbach the Waldnaab river has cut through the granite. Rock walls 30 to 50 metres high, huge polished boulders in the riverbed, ferns, birches and beeches give the valley an almost mystical feel.

In Windischeschenbach scientists drilled 9,101 metres into the earth’s crust – the deepest hole in the world in hard crystalline rock. See the world’s tallest land drilling rig, exhibitions, a geo cinema and lab.

More than 600 million years of earth history: geotopes, nature trails and guided tours – including the serpentinite at Föhrenbühl near Erbendorf, one of Bavaria’s 100 most beautiful geotopes.
